Earlier, my mom said the trip to the lake she and her friends are taking in April will be the Safari's last. And while talking to a neighbor said we're going to start looking for something else for me.

That means I'm getting a new car soon.

GUYS. I'M GETTING A NEW CAR SOON. NO MORE SLOW DEATHTRAP!

I'm elated. Hopefully when spring comes around I can find an older BMW in decent condition for the right price and buy it. Or a truck. Or maybe an SUV. I don't know really. I guess I'm going to have to think about that. I'm all over the place right now.

I let my mom drive exactly one car, one time. My Roadmaster Estate wagon. I was fearful the whole time. I have also driven with her in the car one time in high school. Just cant roll with mom Dukes in my whip. But totally a win on your end getting to roll out in her car.

Trust me, this was anything but free. I basically took over doing household stuff that had to be done while my dad was sick/injured and couldn't. And I'm not talking just mowing or something like that, but taking cars to get inspected, renewing plates, running him to doctors appointments, paying bills for my mom. All that jazz.

I know what you mean by free ride, but yeah they said I've certainly earned it.

I mean, I didn't really have much of a choice but to be patient and okay with driving it. Up until a few months ago, there was no way in hell we could afford a car of any sort. I had more important things to worry about too, like my dad's health.

They're reliable after you completely restore them. Ask me how I know. ;)

Parked my Olds for a several weeks while I was fooling with my Jeep. Started on the first click and not a single drop leaked while it was sitting.

They were reliable transportation 45 years ago, nothing is stopping them from doing it now. It can also be a car your entire family enjoys.

You could easily find one for ~3k and spend about 2k making it really nice. It won't be a big block or a 4 speed, but it will have a soul unlike some fwd sedan.

Classic trucks or SUVs are also something to look into.

Thats weird. I've heard that the new 2.5 engines from 2013 onwards should have much less of a likelihood of needing a head gasket replacement.

Contrary to the popular opinion, they're actually decent cars that aren't out to kill you. Plus, all of ours have been reliable for the most part, my 21 year old van being somewhat excluded.
